Explain
- Open the meeting with a leader-led prayer.
- Review the tool taught the previous week. Ask someone to explain it. Then ask if anyone has a story about applying it.
- Go the Tools page and look at the Overview together. The main thing is to give people an idea of where you're at with respect to Tell, Teach and Train.
- From the Tools page, read about the One Thing Study. Depending on your teaching situation (virtual or in-person), you can explain it using screen share or have everyone read it from their own devices.
Model
- Demonstrate the tool with the entire group.
Have them all do an abbreviated One Thing Study together. Observe: Ask the group to read the same passage of Scripture. Note: Ask them to note a word or phrase that speaks to them. Ask a few people to share what they noted. Express: Ask them all to pray silently about their One Thing.
- Practice what you just demonstrated.
Divide the large group into smaller groups and practice what was just demonstrated. One person in each group leads the rest of the group in doing the three steps of a One Thing Study.
O=Observe: Each person in the group selects and reads their own passage of Scripture.
N=Note: Each person in the group marks the word or phrase that speaks to them the most. Then each person in the group shares what word or phrase the picked and why they picked it. Try to remember to use the words, I and me, when sharing.
E=Express: The group prays about their One Thing. Pray aloud if you're comfortable doing so.
If time permits, rotate the leadership and do another round of One Thing Studies.
Debrief
- Review what you just practiced.
Gather the group back together into one group and ask the following questions:
"What did you just learn?" This question is about the concept of the One Thing Study, not the content.
"Will someone in the group tell us how to do a One Thing study, without looking at any notes?" The rest of the group can help out. - Review the Helpful Information section of the One Thing Study. Then ask if anyone has any questions.
- Encourage everyone to practice using the tools.
Remind them that the key to gaining the confidence to use the tools with others is to practice between meetings.
- Offer a resource. Don’t Waste Your Life by John Piper.
- Pray as a group. Ask group members to lead out in prayer about the meeting.
- Watch one or more for reflection.
