The FARM conversation is a great way to engage others in a spiritual conversation. It works with friends, classmates, or even strangers. FARM stands for Family, Academics, Recreation, and Message. The Message portion of the conversation is where it becomes spiritual. People are generally very open to this if the dialogue has been friendly and enjoyable. The suggested topics and questions are there to help guide a friendly conversation. Feel free to navigate in a way that feels most natural to you. Build compassion by gently exploring pain points with more questions. A FARM conversation can take place all at once or bit by bit over time. Share common ground experiences, but in a limited way, remembering this is about them, not you.
F = Family: "Tell me about your family."
A = Academics: "What classes are your most and least favorite?"
R = Recreation: "What sports, or hobbies, interest you?"
M = Message:
Explore their story: "It's been fun to get to know you on a personal level, I like to get to know people on a spiritual level, does Jesus play a role in your life? If so, how?"
Share your story: Share Your 15-Second Testimony: Think of two words that describe your life before Jesus and two words that describe your life after meeting Him. Share as follows: "There was a time in my life when I was (insecure) and (angry). Then I met Jesus, put my trust in Him, and made Him number one in my life. Now I am (secure) and (full of joy). Do you have a story like this?"
Invite them into God's story: Say, "I've been learning a lot from the Bible recently. Would you like to discover more about God?" If they say yes, teach them the Student DBS as soon as possible. Then coach them as they share with others.
