SAIL 7:ONGOING COACHING

Training is just the beginning. Without ongoing coaching, even the most passionate disciple-makers can lose focus, stall out, or slip back into complacency. Coaching isn’t about control or expertise—it’s about walking alongside others to encourage faithfulness, simplicity, and reproduction. Regular check-ins help people stay obedient to Jesus, grounded in Scripture, and aligned with the vision to see movements multiply.
  1. Look Back Before You Look Ahead. Begin every coaching conversation by asking, “How did your ‘I will’ statement go?” Celebrate obedience, identify barriers, and reinforce the importance of action over information.
  2. Keep the Bible Central. Anchor every meeting in God’s Word. Ask, “What does this passage say about making disciples?" Let Scripture do the heavy lifting in shaping hearts and guiding next steps.
  3. Plan for Multiplication. Don’t just coach someone to lead a group—coach them to start coaching others. Keep asking, “Who else can you train?” so the DNA of simple, multiplying discipleship continues beyond you.

Community Time

Let’s do a quick recap:
  1. What were the hand signals and key thoughts for Sails One, Two, Three, Four, Five, and Six?
  2. Now for Sail Seven— Ongoing coaching. Hand signals involve touching the mouth and ear, similar to those used by a baseball coach to give signals. Key thought: It's just as essential as training.
  3. Now let’s check in on your “I will” statements: How did they go? What did you try? What did you learn? Any surprises, challenges, or stories to celebrate?

Bible Time

Read one or more of the passages below, answering the question, "What does it teach about coaching?"

Suggested passages:
  1. 1 Thessalonians 3:9-10
  2. 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12
  3. 2 Timothy 2:2
  4. Acts 14:21-23

Action Time

Based on what you heard from God today:
  • What’s one action you believe He’s asking you to take?
  • Who’s one person that comes to mind with whom you could share this?

Write it down and share it with the group. Phrase it as an "I will" statement.

We’ll follow up next time to celebrate what God has done through your obedience.
