SAIL 4: TRAIN BELIEVERS

Keep these principles in mind as you train.

Master the Discovery Bible Study (DBS). DBS isn’t just a method—it’s the engine room of Disciple-Making Movements (DMM). When you know it well, you won’t just use it—you’ll live it and pass it on with confidence. Dive into the resources at the bottom of the page and let DBS become second nature.

Think “Three and Out.” Your mission isn’t to facilitate their group—it’s to release them to facilitate. Train boldly, but hand it off quickly. If you hang on too long, you risk becoming the leader they depend on instead of the coach who empowers them. Remember: multiplication happens when others step up.

Training is just the starting line—coaching is the race. Don’t settle for short-term impact. Real fruit comes when you walk with people over time, cheering them on, helping them push through obstacles, and celebrating every step of obedience. Coaching is where disciples grow deep roots and movements gain unstoppable momentum.

Community Time

Let’s do a quick recap:

  1. What were the hand signals and key thoughts for Sails One, Two, and Three?
  2. Now for Sail Four – Train Believers. Hand Signal: Picture yourself doing curls with an imaginary barbell. Key Thought: Show others how to facilitate a Discovery Bible Study (DBS) with their people. Keep it simple. Keep it multiplying.
  3. Now let’s check in on your action steps from last week: Casting Vision. Share something you learned from a video, a page on this site, or a book from the DMM library.

Bible Time

If your group is new to Discovery Bible Study, take time to walk through a whole session together.

If your group already knows DBS, pick one of the following exercises:

Facilitation Practice

Read through the Facilitator Tips. Then have one person lead a shortened DBS using a story from the Story Sets, focusing only on questions #5 and #6. Afterwards, ask three people for feedback—two share positives, and one offers constructive input.

Follow-Up Questions

Read through the Follow-Up Questions. Then choose a story from the Story Sets, ask questions #5 and #6, and then work together to create thoughtful follow-up questions that dig deeper. Answer a few as a group if time allows. Conclude by discussing why strong follow-up questions matter.

Action Time

Do a Discovery Bible Study (DBS) with someone this week. We will talk about how it went at the next meeting.
