SAIL 3: GO OUT AMONG THE LOST

Going out among the lost is a core practice for those pursuing Disciple-Making Movements (DMM). It’s how they find Persons of Peace, train them to facilitate Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) within their own circles, and coach them toward multiplication. It all begins with stepping into the harvest. There are two main ways to go out among the lost: situationally and intentionally.

Situational outreach happens in the flow of everyday life—at work, in line at the store, during a workout, or while chatting with a neighbor. Wherever there is time and space for conversation. For this, explore the FARM conversation as a helpful framework.

Intentional outreach is purposeful and includes planned efforts like Prayer Walks, where believers go out in teams to engage, listen, pray, and discover who is open.

Both approaches are essential. One is spontaneous; the other is strategic. Together, they help you follow Jesus intentionally—wherever you are.

Community Time

Let’s do a quick recap:
  1. What were the hand signals and key thoughts for Sails One, Two, Three, and Four?
  2. Now for Sail Five – Go Out Among the Lost. The hand signals involve extending each arm with the palm facing out. One for situational and one for intentional. Key thought: do one, but be ready for the other.
  3. Who did you do a DBS with, and how did it go?

Bible Time

Choose the FARM Conversation or the Prayer Walk. The FARM conversation can be rehearsed in small groups. Below is a suggested approach. Prayer Walk requires teams to go out into the community. It can be done between meetings or as a group during this time.
Suggested FARM Conversation Rehearsals

  1. If your group is large, consider breaking into smaller circles in different meeting areas. One person starts by asking a question, then the person who answered asks the next question. Keep the conversation moving naturally around the group.

Ask the F–A (O)–R questions. If you know the person well, try this variation: “Tell me something about your family (or job, or hobby) that I don’t already know.”

  2. When you reach the “M” question, follow these three steps:

    1. Their Story: Ask, “What is your spiritual background?”
    2. Your Story: Share your 15-second testimony.
    3. God’s Story: Share a Bible story that connects naturally, asking what it says about Jesus and people.

  3. End with the Golden Question: “Would you like to know more?”

  4. Take time to rehearse both asking and answering the question, “What do you do?”

Use the information provided on the FARM Conversation page to help shape your responses.

Action Time

Try to do both, but commit to at least one.

1. Situational: Have as much of a FARM conversation as possible with someone this week.

2. Intentional: Set aside one hour this week to walk where there are people and ask if you can pray for those you meet, and see where it leads.
