Discovery Study 2

Discovery Studies reveal the principal truths of Scripture. They are not in-depth examinations of all the details of the Bible. They are driven by questions, and therefore work best in groups where a conversation is natural. They generate dialogue that reveals the core beliefs of Christianity. The participants produce the content of each study. This will become clear as you read about each of the two types of Discovery Studies.
Discovery Study 2 Consists of Two Steps
Step 1. Develop questions using selected answers from Discovery Study 1.

Discovery Study 1 is a prerequisite for Discovery Study 2. Use What, Why, How, When, Where, and Who to create questions from selected answers from Discovery Study 1. You don't have to develop six questions for each selected answer. Only develop (and answer) questions you prefer.
Step 2. Discuss the questions from Step 1.
Talk about the questions in any order. Don't feel constrained to answer all the questions in the time allowed. Some questions may need to be addressed separately outside the study due to time limitations.
Helpful Information
Discovery Study 2 is a great way to study a book of the Bible. Start at the beginning of a book and work through it a passage at a time.

Discovery Study 2 is optimal for those ready to move on from Discovery Study 1. It's for those prepared for a more in depth interaction with Scripture.

Discovery Study 2 questions deepen faith.

  • Ask students to look at the surrounding verses when looking for answers to questions. For instance, "What do the surrounding verses say about what this means?" or "What does the rest of the passage say about why this is important?" This is relevant when the immediate context offers helpful information.

  • Asking "What does this mean?" helps interpret hard to understand truths. Though not required, free sites like BibleGateway and Bible Hub offer multiple translations and commentaries that aid in understanding. Often a paraphrased translation unlocks comprehension. An excellent paid app is Olive Tree. Suggested Olive Tree resources include: Bible Knowledge Commentary, MacArthur Study Bible, and Ryrie Study Bible notes.

  • Ask why and how questions when possible. These questions prompt people to investigate their faith at an in-depth level. Especially the why questions. These are often the missing questions, yet are the very ones that develop maturity.

  • Ask for multiple answers to questions with an obvious answer. If a question has a plain answer, ask for several examples. This encourages the participants to think more deeply than they would for a single answer.

  • Ask for explanations. If the question has a yes or no answer, ask the responders to give the reasons for their answers.

  • Ask follow up questions. Secondary questions extend the conversation and bring a clarity that might not otherwise occur. For instance, asking a why question at the end of an answer deepens the line of thinking.

  • Ask personal questions and seek personal answers. When preferred, use the term you in the question, and the encourage terms I and me in the answers. This prevents the discussion from drifting into the unproductive realm of, we, us, them, and they.

Discovery Study 2 answers are influenced by the type of Scripture being studied. Revelation was progressive, and unfolding as it was being recorded. Answers should be guided by knowing if the truths apply to the past, present or future.

Discovery Study 2 confidence comes with practice. Doing these studies on your own deepens faith, elevates confidence, and energizes the soul.
