DBS Follow-up questions deepen conversation and further understanding in a Discovery Group, especially for groups needing more discussion or already familiar with the topic. How to Use Follow-Up Questions:
Build on Original Answers: Use key words from the answers to the main question: "What does this passage reveal about God and people?" This keeps the discussion focused and relevant. See sample below.
Use various types of Follow-Up Questions: Use What, Why, How, When, Where and Who as prompts for developing questions. What questions aim at meaning and often require additional questions for personal application. For instance, "What does this mean and how can you apply it to your life?"
Focus on personalized questions. Use "you" instead of "we/us, or they/them" For instance, "Describe a time when this was true for you."
Keep Questions Concise: Aim for simplicity to encourage participation. If you can’t think of a follow-up question within 10 seconds, move to another prompt.
Practice and Preparation: Prepare at least one follow-up question in advance. Be ready to create spontaneous questions based on the conversation. Practice will make you better at asking effective follow-up questions. See sample below.
